How does the role of technology change the teaching learning environment? How does it influence me as a Student and as a Future Teacher?
The classroom can become an interactive learning environment with the help of technology. The students are working on worthwhile projects like problem-based learning assignments, searching the Internet for information for reports, or creating presentations for class. Software and hardware become tools used by the student to create a product to be presented to teachers and fellow students so that they may review, learn, or critique in a collaborative manner (Dawson, Cavanaugh & Ritzhaupt, 2008). The student is able to help the teacher on technology tips that the student has had time to master while the teacher works on directing the instruction as a whole (Mouza, 2008). Hence, the technology benefits in increases of collaboration among teachers and students.
As a student, technology influences me in that sometimes I no longer need to rely on the teacher to find new sources of information, and I can use email to save my homework and projects in a location that is always accessible. It also motivates me to study and work because I can research and access anything, such as references in books, giving me more options to choose and create more sophisticated ideas. According to Mouza 2008, a student with a sense of motivation, pride and empowerment becomes characteristics of the participants.
As a future teacher, technology can help me get closer to my student. In terms of activities, I can create technology-immersed exercises at least they have higher scores. Research has concluded that when students are engaged in technology, there is a gain in achievement in all subject areas ( Wenglinksy,1998; Means, 2010; Shapely, Maloney, & Caranika-Walker,2010). As a teacher, technology allows me to better utilize my time in the classroom. For instance, instead of writing on the board and written text, I can use PowerPoint slides. I believe, that not all students have the same level of comprehension and by using either technology or traditional tools of teaching, teachers must used different approaches, techniques and strategies.
